Adolfo’s Cory (Hoplisoma adolfoi)

A peaceful and attractively marked armored catfish from the upper Rio Negro and surrounding blackwater tributaries in the Middle Amazon basin of Brazil. Named after Adolfo Schwartz, this species is a longtime favorite among Corydoras enthusiasts for its compact size, sociable shoaling behavior, and subtle yet appealing patterning. It remains one of the more commonly available and reliably bred members of the group.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 5.7 cm / ~2.2 inches SL.
• Appearance: Sturdy, armored body with the classic Corydoras-group shape. Females grow larger and more full-bodied than males; mature males develop more pointed fin tips. Coloration typically includes a warm base with orange or yellowish banding and spotting that gives rise to its common name in some regions (“Orangepandet Pansermalle”).
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with rounded to slightly pointed fins depending on sex and maturity.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 20–30 gallons for a small group (larger is better for active shoaling).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 68–79°F (20–26°C), pH 5.6–7.0, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate are essential to protect sensitive barbels. Blackwater conditions with tannins (driftwood, Indian almond leaves) are appreciated but not strictly required for captive-bred fish.
• Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking tablets, granules, flakes, and a variety of live or frozen foods (bloodworm, white worm, daphnia, Tubifex).
• Behavior: Peaceful, sociable shoaling fish that thrives in groups. Excellent community tank inhabitant. Provide driftwood, plants, and open foraging areas with some shaded spots. Breeding is well-documented in captivity; females hold eggs between pelvic fins before depositing them on glass or décor.
