It is an excellent choice for enthusiasts looking for a smaller panaque relative that brings both color and interesting natural behaviors to the aquarium.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 11 cm / ~4.3 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with vibrant orange to tangerine hues and contrasting dark tiger-like stripes or markings. Males develop elongated interopercular odontodes (bristles) and noticeable odontodes along the dorsum during the breeding season; females have larger, rounded genital papillae and appear wider when gravid.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 40–55 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better to reduce territoriality).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–86°F (24–30°C), pH 6.4–7.7, soft to moderately hard (200–700 µS/cm). Excellent water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate flow are important. Provide plenty of driftwood (essential for both diet and natural behavior), caves or hiding spots, and optional rock piles. Plants may be nibbled or disturbed.
• Diet: Primarily xylophagous (wood-eating) with a vegetarian component — must have access to several pieces of driftwood (preferably different types). Supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and fresh vegetables (courgette/zucchini, potato, sweet potato). Small amounts of meaty foods can be offered occasionally.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful with other species but can be territorial toward conspecifics, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept in groups with adequate space and hiding spots (roughly 30x30 cm per fish). Cave breeder; the male guards the eggs and fry until they resemble miniature adults. Excellent for larger planted or biotope aquariums.
