Yellow-breasted Amatitlania (Amatitlania altoflava)

A rare and attractive Central American cichlid from the Atlantic slope of Panama. Part of the convict cichlid group (Amatitlania), this species stands out with its distinctive yellowish breast, fins, and throat, along with subtle spotting on the opercle. Described in 2001, it remains little-known in the hobby and is a true collector’s gem for those seeking something beyond the common convict.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 9.0 cm / ~3.5 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, robust cichlid body with a yellowish wash on the breast, fins, and throat. A rather indistinct longitudinal stripe and opercular spots complete the pattern. Males and females are similar, though males may grow slightly larger and show more intense coloration during breeding.
• Fin Details: Dorsal spines 17–18, soft rays 9–10; anal spines 8–9, soft rays 7–9.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 gallons for a pair or small group (larger is better for territory).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. Excellent water quality and a well-structured tank with caves, driftwood, and plants are recommended.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and occasional vegetable matter.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful for a cichlid when kept in appropriately sized tanks with plenty of hiding spots. Can be territorial during breeding. Best kept with other peaceful to moderately active tankmates.
