Blue Panaque

Blue Panaque (Baryancistrus beggini) Also known as L239

A compact and highly sought-after pleco from the Orinoco and Upper Orinoco drainages in Venezuela. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L239), this species is prized for its manageable size, attractive deep blue coloration, and the characteristic fused dorsal-adipose fin typical of the genus. Despite its popularity in aquariums, it is listed as Vulnerable in the wild due to its limited range.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 8.1 cm / ~3.2 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with a subtle blue sheen, especially visible in well-conditioned specimens. The dorsal fin is fused to the adipose fin. Males may develop slightly more pronounced odontodes (bristles) on the head as they mature. Sunken eyes are a sign of poor nutrition or stress.
• Fin Details: Dorsal fin fused to adipose fin (genus trait); strong pectoral spines.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 73–84°F (23–29°C), pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate flow are important. Provide plenty of driftwood, caves, and hiding spots.
• Diet: Omnivorous with a strong vegetarian component — algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, fresh vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber), and occasional meaty foods like bloodworm or shrimp.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Excellent algae-eater and a relatively active bottom dweller compared to larger panaques. Breeding is possible in the aquarium with the right conditions.
