Ihering’s Bumblebee Catfish (Microglanis iheringi)

A tiny and peaceful South American catfish from the Valencia and Turmero regions of Venezuela. Named in honor of the renowned Brazilian ichthyologist Rodolpho von Ihering, this diminutive pimelodid is one of the smallest members of its genus and makes an excellent addition to nano or heavily planted aquariums where its subtle patterning and sociable nature can be appreciated up close.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 3.5 cm / ~1.4 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact body with a broad head and typical bumblebee-style patterning common to the genus. Females in good condition show a noticeably wider abdomen compared to males of similar size.
• Fin Details: Well-developed dorsal and pectoral spines (typical of the family).

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 10–20 gallons for a small group (perfect for nano or planted setups).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and plenty of hiding spots (driftwood, leaf litter, caves) are essential.
• Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — accepts small live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia) and high-quality sinking micro-pellets.
• Behavior: Non-aggressive and sociable with its own kind and other peaceful community fish. Largely nocturnal; young fry may be at risk after dark. Best kept in groups with ample cover.
