A stunning man-made hybrid discus strain that combines the vibrant green base and red patterning of the Checkerboard line with the distinctive black spotting (“peppering”) of the Pigeon Blood mutation. Originally developed from wild South American discus crossed with a 1991 Thai mutation, this hybrid offers a striking mosaic of colors — rich greens, fiery reds, and contrasting dark spots — making it one of the most eye-catching and popular discus varieties in the hobby today. Variants may feature thick or thin lines, high-bodied profiles, or additional orange and golden hues.

• Maximum Size: Typically 15–20 cm / 6–8 inches (adults).
• Appearance: Vibrant green body with red patterning and characteristic black spots or peppering. The “checkerboard” effect comes from the interplay of colors and markings. Selective breeding has produced a wide range of color variations within this strain.
• Fin Details: Typical discus fin structure with rounded, flowing fins that enhance the fish’s graceful movement.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 75–125 gallons for a small group (larger is strongly recommended for discus).
• Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 82–88°F (28–31°C), pH 6.0–7.0, very soft to soft. Excellent water quality with frequent partial water changes (30–50% weekly) is essential. Use RO or aged water with proper remineralization.
• Diet: Omnivorous — high-quality discus pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, beef heart mixes), and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps maintain color and health.
• Behavior: Peaceful but best kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. Sensitive to poor water conditions and temperature fluctuations. Provide driftwood, plants, and hiding spots while leaving open swimming space.
