Cobalt Zebra (Maylandia callainos)
Also known as Cobalt Blue Zebra or Blue Zebra Cichlid
A striking and popular mbuna (rock-dwelling cichlid) endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Originally found in the Nkhata Bay area, this species is renowned for the brilliant cobalt-blue coloration of mature males, accented by dark vertical barring or spotting. Females are more subdued in brownish tones. As a classic Lake Malawi mbuna, it brings vibrant color and active personality to larger aquariums, though it requires proper setup and compatible tankmates to thrive.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: Up to 13.5 cm / ~5.3 inches SL.
- Appearance: Compact, robust mbuna body shape. Males display intense cobalt-blue coloration with dark bars or spots; the blue intensifies with age and good conditions. Females are generally brownish or grayish with less vibrant patterning. Both sexes have the typical mbuna fin structure.
- Fin Details: Typical cichlid fins with rounded to slightly pointed dorsal and anal fins.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a small group (larger is strongly recommended for adults and territory).
- Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.8–8.8, hard (KH 10–15). Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is essential. Provide a rocky setup with plenty of caves, crevices, and hiding spots to mimic its natural habitat and reduce aggression. Sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal.
- Diet: Primarily herbivorous — accepts high-quality spirulina-based flakes or pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, peas). Occasional frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia) can be offered for variety, but avoid overfeeding meaty items.
- Behavior: Active and territorial mbuna. Best kept in groups with one male to several females or in an overcrowded tank with other mbuna to diffuse aggression. Can be aggressive toward similar-looking fish or conspecific males. Excellent for Lake Malawi community tanks with other robust cichlids that share similar water parameters and temperament.
