Coen River Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia trifasciata )
A locality form of Melanotaenia trifasciata from the Coen River in Cape York, Queensland, Australia. It is a hardy and active banded rainbowfish well-suited to larger aquariums.
- Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 10–11 cm (4–4.3 inches) total length.
- Appearance: Body marked with three dark bands. Males display vibrant rainbow coloration and frequently flash a bright iridescent stripe along the back during displays.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (ideally 4 feet or longer) for a school.
- Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–8.0, soft to hard water. Adaptable to a wide range of stable parameters.
- Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
- Behavior: Active schooling fish. Best kept in groups of 6 or more. May bully much smaller tank mates and is best kept with similarly sized species to avoid hybridization.
IUCN Status: Least Concern (species level).
