Concolor Cory "Rio Tomo" CW217 Hoplisoma sp. aff. concolor

A rare and strikingly colored armored catfish from a small, crystal-clear tributary of the Rio Tomo in eastern Colombia. Known in the hobby by its CW code, this locality form is closely related to Hoplisoma concolor but displays a unique and consistent coloration not found in the typical species. It is the only armored catfish in its isolated stream (Cano Negro), making it a true geographic specialist.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: Small species (typically 5–6 cm / ~2–2.4 inches SL in the group).
• Appearance: Strikingly patterned body with coloration distinct from standard H. concolor. Males are easily distinguished by long, pointed pelvic fins and often elongated dorsal fins; females have shorter, more rounded pelvic fins.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with males showing more pronounced fin extensions.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 20–30 gallons for a small group (ideal for planted or biotope setups).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate with leaf litter are recommended.
• Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking micro-pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.
• Behavior: Peaceful and gregarious. Best kept in groups with ample hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. Rarely available as wild-caught imports in small numbers; captive breeding is highly anticipated and would be a major milestone for the hobby.
