Deepwater Creek Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia splendida splendida )

A locality form of the Eastern Rainbowfish from Deepwater Creek in Queensland, Australia. It inhabits freshwater streams and creeks in the region.

  • Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 12 cm (4.7 inches) total length.
  • Appearance: Overall pale bluish-green body with yellowish-orange tones fading to white on the lower sides. Males are larger with a deeper body and more vibrant coloration than females.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for a school.
  • Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderate hardness.
  • Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
  • Behavior: Peaceful schooling fish that occupies the mid-to-upper water column. Best kept in groups.

IUCN Status: Least Concern (species level).
