Teugels' Distichodus

Teugels’ Distichodus (Distichodus teugelsi)

A small and elegant characin-like fish from the acidic blackwater systems of the Congo basin in Central Africa. Named in memory of the late Belgian ichthyologist Guy Teugels (1954–2003), this species is found in both shallow and deeper areas of riparian and flooded forests, where it inhabits soft, humic-acid-rich waters. Its compact size and peaceful nature make it a wonderful addition to blackwater or Congo River biotope aquariums, where its subtle beauty and active swimming can be fully appreciated.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 5.7 cm / ~2.2 inches SL.
• Appearance: Slender, fusiform body typical of many Distichodus species. It lacks the bold spotting seen in some relatives, presenting a more understated, elegant profile suited to shaded, tannin-stained waters. Males and females are similar in appearance.
• Fin Details: Typical characin fin structure with soft, flowing fins that enhance its graceful movement.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 20–30 gallons for a small group (long tank preferred for active swimming).
• Water Parameters: Soft, acidic tropical freshwater; 73–79°F (23–26°C), pH 4.2–6.0, very low hardness. Excellent water quality with tannins (driftwood, Indian almond leaves, or peat) is essential to replicate its natural blackwater habitat. Provide a sandy or fine substrate, driftwood, and some shaded areas with plants or leaf litter.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm). Occasional vegetable matter can be offered.
• Behavior: Peaceful and active swimmer that does well in groups. Best kept with other small, non-aggressive fish from similar soft, acidic habitats. Excellent for blackwater community tanks or species setups.
