Hephaestus Corydoras (Osteogaster hephaestus)

A stunning and rare armored catfish from Brazil, named after Hephaestus — the Greek god of fire, blacksmiths, and artisans — for its remarkable fiery red coloration. Described as appearing “wrapped in flames,” this recently discovered (2016) species is one of the most spectacularly colored members of the Corydoras group and is highly sought after by enthusiasts for its vivid beauty and rarity.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 3.3 cm / ~1.3 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with a truly unique “flame-wrapped” pattern. Fins and body accents glow in vivid reds, contrasting beautifully against the substrate. Males and females are similar, though males may show slightly more intense coloration.
• Fin Details: Short dorsal and pectoral spines; posterior margin of the pectoral-fin spine serrated along almost its entire length.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group (perfect for nano or heavily planted setups).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate with leaf litter are essential.
• Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking micro-pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.
• Behavior: Peaceful, shy, and gregarious. Best kept in groups with plenty of hiding spots among plants, driftwood, and leaf litter. Excellent for planted or Amazonian biotope aquariums.
