Goyder River Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia trifasciata )
A locality form of Melanotaenia trifasciata from the Goyder River in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is known for its particularly vibrant “Banded Jewel” coloration.
- Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 10–12 cm (4–4.7 inches) total length.
- Appearance: Body with electric blue tones layered over a glowing yellow-to-orange base, often separated by a bold dark lateral band. Males display more intense coloration than females.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (ideally 4 feet or longer) for a school.
- Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–8.0, soft to hard water. Adaptable to a wide range of stable parameters.
- Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
- Behavior: Active schooling fish. Best kept in groups of 6 or more. May bully much smaller tank mates.
IUCN Status: Least Concern (species level).
