Honeycomb Bristlenose (Ancistrus sp. "Wabenmuster")

A popular and attractively patterned bristlenose pleco from South America. Known in the hobby as the “Honeycomb Bristlenose” (Wabenmuster means “honeycomb pattern” in German), this Ancistrus variant is prized for its distinctive reticulated markings and the characteristic soft, fleshy tentacles (bristles) that develop on the heads of mature males — and to a lesser extent, females.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: Typically 10–15 cm / ~4–6 inches SL (genus standard).
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with a striking honeycomb-like reticulated pattern. Mature males develop prominent soft tentacles on the snout and head; females have shorter, less bushy bristles.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with rounded fins suited to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better to reduce male territoriality).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and plenty of driftwood, caves, and hiding spots are essential.
• Diet: Primarily vegetarian — algae wafers, spirulina-based sinking foods, and fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach). Small amounts of meaty foods can be offered occasionally.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful and sociable with other species, though males can be territorial with each other in smaller tanks. Excellent algae-eater and cave-breeder — the male guards the eggs and fry. Best kept in groups with ample hiding places.
