A striking and highly sought-after pleco from the Xingu River system in the Lower Amazon basin of Brazil. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L236) and nicknamed the “Cracked Zebra Pleco” for its distinctive irregular black-and-white zebra patterning that appears “cracked” or fragmented, this species combines bold geometric markings with a snub-nosed profile and the classic Hypancistrus body shape. It remains a favorite among enthusiasts who appreciate its unique appearance and the interesting behaviors typical of the genus. Key Features

• Maximum Size: 12 cm / ~4.7 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with a striking “cracked zebra” pattern of bold black lines on a lighter background. Males develop a thicker first pectoral fin ray, more pronounced odontodes (bristles) on the pectoral fin, cheeks, and rear of the body, and a wider head; females are broader around the midsection with less noticeable bristles.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins suited to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 40–55 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–84°F (24–29°C), pH 6.6–7.6, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate current are appreciated. Provide sand or fine gravel, rocks, driftwood, and plenty of caves or hiding spots (slate, bamboo, or PVC pipes work well for breeding).
• Diet: Carnivorous — readily accepts meaty foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets or discus food. Unlike many plecos, it is not a strong algae grazer and performs best with a protein-rich diet.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Shy at first but becomes more active once settled. Closed cave spawner; the male guards the eggs and fry. Excellent for larger planted or biotope aquariums with other peaceful fish that won’t compete aggressively for food.
