Gold King Tiger Pleco, Select (Hypancistrus sp. L333)
A highly popular and intricately patterned pleco from the Xingu River in the Lower Amazon, Brazil. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L333) and nicknamed the “Maze Zebra Pleco” for its striking labyrinthine black-and-white or black-and-yellow patterning, this species stands out with its bold geometric design and relatively large size for the genus. It is one of the most sought-after Hypancistrus in the aquarium trade. This variant is our highest quality L333 line.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 15 cm / ~5.9 inches SL.
- Appearance: Compact, armored body with a dramatic maze-like zebra pattern. Males develop thicker pectoral fin rays and more pronounced odontodes (bristles) on the cheeks and body; females are broader around the midsection with less prominent bristles.
- Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 40–55 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better).
- Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 79–88°F (26–31°C), pH 6.4–7.2, very soft to soft (80–120 µS). Excellent water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate flow are important. Provide plenty of driftwood, caves, and hiding spots.
- Diet: Carnivorous — readily accepts meaty foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, discus pellets, and occasional high-quality sinking carnivore wafers. Unlike many plecos, it does not rely heavily on algae or vegetables.
- Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Shy at first but becomes more active once settled. Cave spawner; the male guards the eggs and fry. Excellent for larger planted or biotope aquariums with other peaceful fish.
