A bold and popular larger pleco from the Middle Orinoco River system in Venezuela. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L128) and nicknamed the “Blue Phantom Pleco” for its striking spotted patterning and somewhat elusive, “phantom-like” presence, this species stands out with its robust build and attractive markings. It remains a favorite among enthusiasts who appreciate its size, active foraging, and the way it thrives in well-structured aquariums with moderate current.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 18 cm / ~7.1 inches SL (up to 20 cm TL).
• Appearance: Sturdy, armored body with distinctive spotted patterning that can vary from fine spots to larger blotches. The overall coloration often carries subtle blue or grayish tones, giving it the “phantom” moniker. Males and females show visual differences, with males typically developing more pronounced features as they mature.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins suited to life in moderate current.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 75–125 gallons for a single specimen or small group (larger is strongly recommended due to adult size).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 77–86°F (25–30°C), pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality, good oxygenation, and moderate current are appreciated. Provide sand or fine gravel, rocks, driftwood, and plenty of caves or hiding spots.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp), and occasional vegetables. A varied diet supports health and coloration.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept singly or in small groups with adequate space and hiding spots. Excellent for larger planted or riverine biotope aquariums with other robust, peaceful fish. Breeding is possible in captivity, with males guarding eggs in caves.
