A striking and highly sought-after pleco from the clear-water rivers of the Rio Tapajós system in the Lower Amazon basin of Brazil. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L134) and nicknamed the “Leopard Frog Pleco” for its bold, spotted patterning reminiscent of a leopard frog, this medium-sized species stands out with its attractive markings and interesting cave-spawning behavior. While popular in aquariums, it is listed as Endangered in the wild, making captive-bred specimens especially valuable for conservation-minded hobbyists.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 11 cm / ~4.3 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with distinctive leopard-like spotting and patterning. Males develop small, teeth-like odontodes on the leading pectoral fin rays and the rear half of the body; females lack these prominent odontodes and appear wider-bodied when viewed from above, especially when gravid.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 40–55 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 5.0–7.4, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and moderate to fast flow are appreciated. Provide rock piles, driftwood tangles, and caves or hiding spots. Plants are not essential but can be included.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp), and occasional vegetables. A varied diet supports health and coloration.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful with other species but can be territorial toward conspecifics. Best kept in groups with adequate space and hiding spots. Cave spawner; the male guards the eggs and fry. Excellent for larger planted or biotope aquariums with other peaceful fish.
