Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis) L200

A striking and popular pleco from the fast-flowing waters of the Upper Orinoco and Ventuari river systems in Venezuela. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L200) and nicknamed the “Green Phantom Pleco” for its subtle yet attractive green coloration and somewhat elusive, “phantom-like” appearance, this species is appreciated for its manageable size, active foraging behavior, and the way it thrives in well-oxygenated, current-rich aquariums.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 15 cm / ~5.9 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with a distinctive greenish hue that can range from olive to brighter lime tones, often with subtle spotting or mottling. Males and females show visual differences, with males typically developing more pronounced features as they mature. Xanthic (golden-yellow) variants are occasionally seen in the trade.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins suited to life in moderate to fast current.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 55–75 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better to provide adequate current and territory).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–77°F (22–25°C), pH 6.0–7.8, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality, high oxygenation, and moderate to fast current are important. Provide sand or fine gravel, rocks, driftwood, and plenty of caves or hiding spots.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp), and occasional vegetables. A varied diet supports health and coloration.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Best kept in groups with adequate space and hiding spots. Excellent for larger planted or riverine biotope aquariums with other fish that appreciate current. Breeding is possible in captivity, with males guarding eggs in caves.
