Lake Wanam Rainbowfish (Glossolepis wanamensis)
A stunning freshwater rainbowfish endemic to Lake Wanam, a small plateau lake west of Lae in Papua New Guinea. Highly sought after for its vibrant colors and the dramatic appearance of mature males.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 9.0 cm / ~3.5 inches SL.
- Appearance: Males display spectacular colors with green that glows yellow under light, a bright stripe along the spine, and reddish accents on the breast and fin edges. Females are less vibrant.
- Fin Details: Dorsal spines 6–8, dorsal soft rays 9–11; anal spines 1, anal soft rays 18–21.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for a small school (6 or more recommended for best coloration and natural behavior).
- Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 79–86°F (26–30°C), pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness.
- Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active mid-to-upper water column schooling fish. Excellent for planted community tanks with similarly sized peaceful companions. Provide a tight-fitting lid as rainbowfishes are known to jump.
