A robust and interesting riverine cichlid from the middle Congo River basin in Central Africa. Part of the diverse lamprologine group, this species is appreciated for its relatively peaceful nature (for a cichlid), pair-bonding behavior, and cave-spawning habits. Unlike many of its Lake Tanganyika relatives, it is somewhat less dependent on strong current and can often be found in more open water areas, making it a versatile choice for larger community tanks or Congo River biotopes.

• Maximum Size: 13 cm / ~5.1 inches TL.
• Appearance: Sturdy, elongated body typical of riverine lamprologines. Coloration is generally understated in neutral tones, with males often showing more intense hues and fin extensions during breeding. Females are similar but slightly smaller. The species lacks the extreme sexual dimorphism seen in some Lake Tanganyika lamprologines.
• Fin Details: Typical cichlid fin structure with rounded to slightly pointed fins depending on sex and condition.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 55–75 gallons for a pair or small group (larger is strongly recommended).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 73–77°F (23–25°C), pH 6.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard (5–19°dGH). Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is important. Provide a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, rockwork, driftwood, and plenty of caves or hiding spots for spawning and territory. Moderate flow is appreciated but not as critical as with some rheophilic relatives.
• Diet: Omnivorous/carnivorous — accepts high-quality pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp or fish), and occasional live foods. A varied diet supports health and breeding condition.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful for a cichlid when kept in appropriately sized tanks with plenty of structure. Forms pairs and is a cave spawner; both parents may participate in care, though the female often takes the lead with the eggs and fry. Best kept with other robust but non-aggressive fish. Can be territorial toward conspecifics, especially during breeding.
