Aulonocara (Peacock Cichlids)

A stunning genus of Lake Malawi cichlids renowned for the breathtaking colors of the males, earning them the common name “Peacock Cichlids.” Endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, Aulonocara species are among the most popular and visually striking fish in the aquarium hobby. While females are generally more subdued in coloration, mature males display vibrant hues of blue, yellow, red, and orange, often with intricate patterns that intensify during breeding. Their graceful swimming and relatively peaceful nature (compared to many mbuna) make them excellent choices for larger community tanks or Lake Malawi setups.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: Typically 10–15 cm / 4–6 inches (depending on species).
• Appearance: Elongated, laterally compressed body with a distinctive “peacock” display in males. Coloration varies widely by species and selectively bred strains, ranging from electric blues and sunny yellows to fiery oranges and deep reds. Many exhibit a metallic sheen or contrasting vertical barring. Females are usually brownish or grayish with less vibrant patterning.
• Fin Details: Males often develop longer, more flowing dorsal and anal fins, enhancing their elegant presence.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 75–125 gallons for a small group (larger is strongly recommended).
• Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 76–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.5–8.8, hard (KH 10–20). Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is essential. Provide a sandy substrate with rockwork, caves, and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. Moderate flow is appreciated.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes or pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworm, daphnia), and occasional vegetable matter. A varied diet supports health and vibrant male coloration.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful for Lake Malawi cichlids when kept in appropriately sized tanks with plenty of structure. Best kept in groups with one male to several females or with other similarly sized, non-aggressive cichlids. Males can be territorial toward each other during breeding. Mouthbrooders; females hold eggs and fry in their mouths for several weeks. Excellent for Lake Malawi community tanks or species setups.
