Rio Napo Cory (Gastrodermus napoensis)

A tiny and peaceful armored catfish from the Upper Amazon basin, specifically the Napo and Aguarico river systems in Ecuador and Peru. Known in the hobby as the “Rio Napo Cory,” this diminutive species is appreciated for its compact size, sociable shoaling behavior, and subtle patterning that blends beautifully in planted or blackwater aquariums. Its small stature makes it an excellent choice for nano tanks or species setups where its active foraging can be enjoyed up close.

Key Features

  • Maximum Size: 4.2 cm / ~1.7 inches SL.
  • Appearance: Compact, armored body with the classic Corydoras-group shape. Females grow slightly larger and more full-bodied than males; mature males develop more pointed fin tips. Coloration is generally understated with the typical mottled or spotted patterning common to many Upper Amazon Corydoras-group species.
  • Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with rounded to slightly pointed fins depending on sex and maturity.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 10–20 gallons for a small group (nano or planted tanks are ideal).
  • Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–79°F (22–26°C), pH 6.0–7.4, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate are essential to protect sensitive barbels. Blackwater conditions with tannins (driftwood or Indian almond leaves) are appreciated.
  • Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking tablets, granules, flakes, and a variety of live or frozen foods (bloodworm, white worm, daphnia, Tubifex).
  • Behavior: Peaceful, sociable shoaling fish that thrives in groups. Excellent community tank inhabitant, especially in smaller or heavily planted setups. Provide driftwood, plants, and some shaded areas. Breeding is possible in captivity, with several reports available in the hobby.
