Brichardi (Neolamprologus brichardi)
Also known as Fairy Cichlid or Princess of Burundi
A graceful and popular Lake Tanganyika cichlid named after the renowned Belgian explorer, collector, and aquarium fish exporter Jean-Pierre Brichard. Known for its elegant appearance, lyre-shaped tail, and relatively peaceful (for a cichlid) nature, this species forms strong pair bonds and jointly defends its territory. It remains one of the most beloved and commonly kept Tanganyikan cichlids in the hobby, appreciated for both its beauty and its interesting social behaviors.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 9 cm / ~3.5 inches TL.
- Appearance: Slender, elongated body with a light base coloration often accented by subtle blue or yellow hues. The standout feature is the graceful, lyre-shaped caudal fin. Males and females are similar, though males may show slightly more intense coloration and fin extensions during breeding. The overall “fairy-like” elegance gives rise to its common name.
- Fin Details: Characteristic lyre-shaped tail fin that enhances its graceful swimming motion.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 80 cm / ~32 inches base length for a pair (larger for groups or community setups).
- Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 72–77°F (22–25°C), pH 8.0–9.0, moderate to hard (9–19°dGH). Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is essential. Provide a sandy substrate, rockwork with plenty of caves and crevices for territory and spawning, and some hardy plants if desired. Moderate flow is appreciated.
- Diet: Omnivorous/plankton feeder — accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm), and occasional vegetable matter. A varied diet supports health and breeding condition.
- Behavior: Generally peaceful for a Lake Tanganyika cichlid when kept in appropriately sized tanks with plenty of structure. Forms strong pair bonds and jointly defends territory. Best kept as a bonded pair or in small groups with adequate space and hiding spots. Cave or crevice spawner; both parents participate in care. Excellent for Tanganyikan community tanks with other non-aggressive species.
