Multies (Neolamprologus multifasciatus)
Also known as Shell Dweller or Multi
A tiny and fascinating shell-dwelling cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known in the hobby as “Multies” or simply “Shell Dwellers,” this species is one of the smallest cichlids in the world and is prized for its unique colonial lifestyle, where individuals live in dense groups, each claiming its own empty snail shell as a home and spawning site. Its small size, intriguing behavior, and relative ease of care make it an excellent choice for nano tanks, species aquariums, or Lake Tanganyika biotopes.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 4 cm / ~1.6 inches TL.
- Appearance: Very small, elongated body with multiple vertical bands or bars (hence “multifasciatus”). Coloration is generally subtle in neutral tones, with males often showing slightly more intense hues during breeding. Both sexes are similar in size and appearance, though males may develop slightly longer fins.
- Fin Details: Typical for small lamprologines, with rounded fins suited to their shell-based lifestyle.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 10–20 gallons for a small colony (larger is better to allow natural colony expansion).
- Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 75–79°F (24–26°C), pH 8.0–9.0, hard (15–25°dGH). Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is essential. Provide a sandy substrate and plenty of empty snail shells (or similar small caves) for each individual. Moderate flow and good oxygenation are appreciated.
- Diet: Omnivorous/plankton feeder — accepts high-quality micro-pellets, flakes, and small live or frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops). A varied diet supports health and breeding.
- Behavior: Forms dense colonies where each fish defends a tiny territory centered around its shell. Peaceful toward other species when provided with enough shells and space, but highly territorial toward conspecifics within the colony. Cave/shell spawner; both parents participate in care, with the female often staying inside the shell with the eggs and fry. Excellent for species tanks or with other small, non-aggressive Tanganyikan fish.
