A secretive and fascinating wood-dwelling catfish from the lower Amazon basin in Brazil, specifically the Rio Nhamundá system. Nicknamed the “Ninja Woodcat” for its stealthy, camouflaged lifestyle and preference for hiding deep within driftwood crevices and hollows, this rarely seen species brings a touch of the Amazon’s mysterious underwater forests to the aquarium.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: Small species (typically under 6 cm / ~2.4 inches SL in the genus).
• Appearance: Slender, elongated body with excellent camouflage patterning suited to life among wood and leaf litter. The “ninja” moniker comes from its ability to disappear into tight crevices. Males and females are similar in appearance.
• Fin Details: Prominent pectoral spines (typical of the genus, referenced in the name Centromochlus from Greek for “sting” and “lever”).

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons for a small group; larger tanks preferred for multiple specimens.
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and gentle flow are important.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts small live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia) and high-quality sinking micro-pellets.
• Behavior: Peaceful but shy and nocturnal. Highly gregarious when provided with ample driftwood, pipes, and tight hiding spots. Excellent for heavily decorated planted or biotope aquariums.
