Ornate Rainbowfish (Rhadinocentrus ornatus)
The sole member of the monotypic genus Rhadinocentrus, this beautiful freshwater rainbowfish is native to coastal streams, stagnant pools, and tannin-stained waters of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, Australia. Known for its intricate scale pattern, it is a popular choice for planted aquariums.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 6.0 cm / ~2.4 inches SL.
- Appearance: Semi-transparent silvery body with a network pattern formed by dark scale margins and iridescent colors including shades of pink, blue, or red. Fins are usually red or blue. Highly variable by locality.
- Fin Details: Two dorsal fins, first with 3-5 spines, second with 11-15 rays.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a small school (6 or more recommended for best coloration and natural behavior).
- Water Parameters: Tropical to subtropical; 68–86°F (20–30°C), pH 6.0–6.5, soft water (dH 4–8). Prefers tannin-stained water with cover.
- Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, frozen, and live foods.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active schooling fish. Excellent for planted aquariums with gentle flow and cover. Provide a tight-fitting lid.
