Parkinson's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia parkinsoni) Also known as the Orange Rainbowfish

A vibrant and sought-after freshwater rainbowfish endemic to the lowland rainforest streams and rivers of Papua New Guinea. Known for its striking orange accents, this species brings bold color and lively activity to the aquarium.

Key Features

  • Maximum Size: 11.0 cm / ~4.3 inches SL (males larger, reaching approximately 5 inches total length).
  • Appearance: Elongated, fusiform body. Males display a beautiful silvery-blue anterior body with bright orange to golden blotches and stripes on the posterior half that extend into the fins. The fins are a vivid orange, creating a fiery glow under good lighting. Females are more subdued with silvery-blue to pale gold tones.
  • Fin Details: Dorsal spines 6–7, dorsal soft rays 9–12; anal spines 1, anal soft rays 18–23.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons for a small school (6 or more recommended for best coloration and behavior).
  • Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 79–86°F (26–30°C), pH 7.5–8.0, moderate hardness.
  • Diet: Omnivorous — readily accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. Varied diet enhances coloration.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, active mid-to-upper water column schooling fish. Ideal for peaceful community tanks with similar sized companions. Provide open swimming space and a tight-fitting lid as they are excellent jumpers.
