Queen Arabesque Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L260)

A compact and strikingly patterned pleco from the Rio Tapajós in the Lower Amazon basin of Brazil. Known in the hobby by its L-number (L260) and nicknamed the “Queen Arabesque Pleco” for its elegant, intricate markings, this species is highly sought after for its manageable size, attractive appearance, and relatively active nature compared to larger plecos. It remains one of the most popular Hypancistrus in the aquarium trade.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 9 cm / ~3.5 inches SL.
• Appearance: Compact, armored body with the signature “arabesque” patterning that gives the species its common name — typically featuring bold black-and-white or contrasting geometric markings. Males develop erect odontodes (bristles) on the head and pectoral fins as they mature and may show a broader head; females are slightly smaller with less pronounced bristles.
• Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with strong pectoral spines and rounded fins suited to their bottom-dwelling lifestyle.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 gallons for a small group or community setup (larger is better).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 73–82°F (23–28°C), pH 6.4–7.6, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality, high oxygenation, and moderate to fast current are important. Provide sand or fine gravel, driftwood, rocks, and plenty of caves or hiding spots (slate, bamboo, or PVC pipes work well for breeding).
• Diet: Carnivorous — readily accepts meaty foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets or discus food. Unlike many plecos, it is not a strong algae grazer and performs best with a protein-rich diet.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful but can be territorial with other plecos, especially in smaller tanks. Shy at first but becomes more active once settled. Closed cave spawner; the male guards the eggs and fry. Excellent for larger planted or biotope aquariums with other peaceful fish that won’t compete aggressively for food.
