A spectacular selectively bred strain of angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) that represents the pinnacle of the Koi angelfish lineage. Developed through careful genetic selection and expert husbandry, this variety is prized for its exceptional orange coverage. No two fish are identical; each displays a unique, bold arrangement of color that makes every individual a living work of art. With their tall, elegant body shape and long, flowing finnage, these angelfish command attention in any display tank.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: Typically 15–20 cm / 6–8 inches (body and fins) in well-maintained aquariums; available in a range of sizes from juveniles to large adults.
• Appearance: Striking high-coverage mosaic of saturated orange-red and inky black on a clean white canvas. The “Red Devil” nickname reflects the intense red-orange coloration that dominates many specimens. Veil-fin and standard-fin variants are available, both showcasing graceful, flowing fins.
• Fin Details: Long, elegant dorsal and anal fins typical of angelfish; veil-fin forms exhibit even more dramatic, extended finnage.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 75–125 gallons for a small group (larger is strongly recommended for adults and to allow natural swimming behavior).
• Water Parameters: Warm tropical freshwater; 78–86°F (26–30°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality with regular partial changes is essential. Provide tall plants, driftwood, or vertical décor to complement their tall body shape while leaving open swimming space.
• Diet: Omnivorous — accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, beef heart mixes), and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps maintain vibrant coloration and overall health.
• Behavior: Active, aware, and interactive once settled. Generally peaceful when kept in groups but can be territorial toward other angelfish or similarly shaped fish. Best suited for show tanks, lush planted aquascapes, or as centerpiece fish in community setups with confident tankmates. Selective breeding has produced hardy, colorful specimens that are more adaptable than many wild-type angelfish.
