Red Lizard Catfish (Rineloricaria sp. L010A)

Also known as Red Whiptail Catfish

A striking and popular whiptail catfish from South America, known in the hobby by its L-number (L010A) and prized for its vibrant reddish coloration. This elongated, armored catfish combines the classic whiptail body shape with eye-catching red hues that intensify in well-conditioned specimens, making it a favorite for planted aquariums and community tanks where its active foraging and interesting breeding behavior can be observed.

Key Features

  • Maximum Size: 11 cm / ~4.3 inches SL.
  • Appearance: Slender, elongated body typical of the whiptail group, with a reddish base coloration that gives it the “Red Lizard” or “Red Whiptail” common names. Males may develop more pronounced odontodes (bristles) on the head and pectoral fins as they mature; females appear broader when gravid.
  • Fin Details: Long, flowing caudal fin and typical loricariid fin structure suited to their bottom-dwelling, foraging lifestyle.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 gallons for a small group or community setup.
  • Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate are important to protect sensitive barbels. Provide driftwood, caves or open-ended tubes (for breeding), and plants for cover.
  • Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — accepts sinking pellets, algae wafers, and a variety of live or frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia). Occasional vegetable matter can be offered.
  • Behavior: Peaceful and active forager that does well in groups. Males are known to guard eggs in open-ended tubes or caves during breeding. Excellent community tank inhabitant that helps keep the substrate clean. Best kept with other peaceful fish that won’t compete aggressively for food or territory.
