A bold and impressive larger pleco from the blackwater systems of the Middle Amazon, including the Negro and Demini drainages in Brazil. Known in the hobby by its LDA number (LDA007) and nicknamed the “Leopard Cactus Pleco” for its striking spotted patterning and prominent keeled, spiny body armor, this species stands out with its robust build, carnivorous tendencies, and the hypertrophied odontodes (bristles) that develop along the snout and body of mature males.

Key Features

• Maximum Size: 24 cm / ~9.4 inches SL.
• Appearance: Sturdy, heavily armored body with longitudinal rows of keels and pointed odontodes along the sides. The “leopard” patterning consists of dark spots on a lighter background. Males develop more pronounced bristles on the snout margin and along the dorsum, especially during breeding; females are slightly less ornate but can appear broader when gravid.
• Fin Details: 8 or more dorsal-fin rays; 5 anal-fin branched rays. Strong pectoral spines typical of the genus.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 75–125 gallons for a single specimen or small group (larger is strongly recommended due to adult size and territorial tendencies).
• Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 5.6–7.0, soft to moderately hard. Blackwater conditions with tannins are preferred. Excellent water quality, high oxygenation, and moderate flow are important. Provide ample driftwood, caves, overhangs, and structured décor to break up sight lines and reduce aggression.
• Diet: Carnivorous — readily accepts prawns, chopped mussel, high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, and occasional vegetables for balance. Unlike many plecos, it is not a strong algae grazer.
• Behavior: Generally peaceful with other species but can be territorial or aggressive toward conspecifics or similarly shaped fish, especially if the tank lacks sufficient structure. Best kept singly or in groups with plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers. Cave or crevice spawner; the male guards the eggs and fry. Excellent for larger aquariums with other robust, peaceful fish.
