Smudge Spot Cory (Hoplisoma simile)
Also known as Violet Cory or Violetta Cory
A tiny and charming armored catfish from the tributaries of the Rio Madeira in the Middle Amazon basin of Brazil. Known in the hobby by names such as “Smudge Spot Cory” and “Violet Cory,” this diminutive species is prized for its subtle yet attractive patterning and peaceful, active nature. Its small size makes it an excellent choice for nano tanks, heavily planted aquariums, or species setups where its shoaling behavior and delicate beauty can be fully appreciated.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 3.8 cm / ~1.5 inches SL.
- Appearance: Compact, armored body with the classic Corydoras-group shape and subtle “smudge spot” or violet-hued patterning. Females grow slightly larger and more full-bodied than males; mature males develop more pointed fin tips. Albino variants are occasionally available.
- Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with rounded to slightly pointed fins depending on sex and maturity.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 10–20 gallons for a small group (nano or planted tanks are ideal).
- Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 70–81°F (21–27°C), pH 5.6–7.0, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate are essential to protect sensitive barbels. Blackwater conditions with tannins (driftwood or Indian almond leaves) are appreciated.
- Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking tablets, granules, flakes, and a variety of live or frozen foods (bloodworm, white worm, daphnia, Tubifex).
- Behavior: Peaceful, sociable shoaling fish that thrives in groups. Excellent community tank inhabitant, especially in smaller or heavily planted setups. Provide driftwood, plants, and some shaded areas. Breeding is well-documented in captivity; females hold eggs between pelvic fins before depositing them on glass or décor.
