Spotted Rainbowfish (Glossolepis maculosa)
A small and unique freshwater rainbowfish from high altitude (150-800 m) swamps and creeks in the Markham and Ramu river systems of Papua New Guinea. Distinguished by its spotted pattern and compact size, this species is a rare gem in the aquarium hobby.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 5.0 cm / ~2 inches SL.
- Appearance: Small, fusiform body. Males display red-orange body with iridescent blue line along the back and spotting on the fins.
- Fin Details: Dorsal spines 6–7, dorsal soft rays 9–10; anal spines 1, anal soft rays 18–20.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons for a small school (6 or more recommended for best coloration and natural behavior).
- Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 73–81°F (23–27°C), pH 7.5–7.8, moderate hardness.
- Diet: Omnivorous — readily accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active schooling fish. Excellent for planted community tanks with similarly sized peaceful companions. Provide a tight-fitting lid as rainbowfishes are known to jump.
