Sungai Klasam Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia fredericki )
A locality form of Melanotaenia fredericki from the Sungai Klasam region near Sorong in West Papua, Indonesia. Native populations face significant habitat pressure from industrial development.
- Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 12–15 cm (4.7–6 inches) total length.
- Appearance: Males possess a bright iridescent stripe running from the top of the mouth along the back to the dorsal fin. This stripe is frequently flashed on and off during displays, creating a striking neon-like effect combined with the species’ overall colorful body.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (ideally 4 feet or longer) for a school.
- Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.0–8.5, moderate to hard water. Adaptable to a range of stable parameters.
- Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods. Prefers soft or small foods.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active, and fast-swimming schooling fish. Males frequently display by flashing their iridescent stripe. Best kept in groups.
