Susi Creek Rainbowfish

Susii Rainbowfish ( Melanotaenia susii )

A rainbowfish endemic to Susi Creek in the Bird’s Head region of West Papua, Indonesia. It inhabits clear, shallow, slow-flowing waters over limestone and muddy bottoms with dead tree branches and dense forest cover. This species is listed as Critically Endangered due to its extremely limited natural range and ongoing habitat threats.

• Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 12–13 cm (4.7–5.1 inches) total length.
• Appearance: Body marked with 2–5 vertical bars extending across the full depth. Males exhibit vibrant reds, oranges, and purples with bold red-edged fins and electric blue tones on the dorsal and anal fins. Females are generally less intensely colored.

Aquarium Care

• Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (ideally 4 feet or longer) for a school.
• Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness. Clear, well-oxygenated water with some cover is beneficial.
• Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
• Behavior: Peaceful, active schooling fish. Males frequently display vibrant colors and fin edging. Best kept in groups.
