Synergos Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia synergos)

A rare and elegant freshwater rainbowfish endemic to the clear, narrow rivers of Batanta Island in Western New Guinea (Indonesia). Described in 2008, this compact species is prized by rainbowfish enthusiasts for its subtle yet striking coloration featuring a vivid blue back and a bold bluish-black midlateral stripe.
Key Features
- Maximum Size: 6.7 cm / ~2.6 inches SL (reaches approximately 3 inches total length).
- Appearance: Sleek, fusiform body. In life, the back is blue, lower body pale tan or whitish, with a prominent bluish-black midlateral stripe running from the preopercle to the caudal-fin base (more strongly contrasted in males).
- Fin Details: Dorsal spines 4–6, dorsal soft rays 11–14; anal spines 1, anal soft rays 19–22.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 30–40 gallons for a small school (6 or more recommended for best coloration and behavior).
- Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.5–8.5, moderate hardness. Appreciates moderate flow and gravel substrate.
- Diet: Omnivorous — readily accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods.
- Behavior: Peaceful, active mid-to-upper water column schooling fish. Excellent for planted community tanks with similarly sized peaceful companions. Provide a tight-fitting lid as rainbowfishes are known to jump.
