Upper Tor Rainbowfish ( Chilatherina sp. "Upper Tor" )
An undescribed rainbowfish from the Upper Tor River region near Sarmi in West Papua, Indonesia. It is a relatively new arrival in the aquarium hobby and is known for its highly variable and dramatic coloration.
- Maximum Size: Reaches approximately 10–11.5 cm (4–4.5 inches) total length in aquariums.
- Appearance: Coloration changes significantly depending on mood and activity. At rest the body appears pale yellow-orange. When displaying it becomes a glowing white-gold. During sparring or heightened activity it can turn charcoal black with a prominent golden headstripe.
Aquarium Care
- Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons for a school, with good swimming space.
- Water Parameters: 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness. Moderate water movement is appreciated.
- Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
- Behavior: Active schooling fish. Males are particularly colorful when displaying or sparring. Best kept in groups.
