Van Heurn's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia vanheurni)

One of the larger rainbowfish species, endemic to the Taritatu (Idenburg) and Doorman Rivers in Irian Jaya (West Papua), Indonesia. This impressive fish is prized by aquarists for its size and the striking colors that develop in mature males.

 

Key Features

  • Maximum Size: 16.0 cm / ~6.3 inches SL (males larger).
  • Appearance: Robust, fusiform body. Olive to brown upper body with yellow lower sides; males develop vibrant iridescent teal, orange, and golden tones.
  • Fin Details: Dorsal spines 5–7, dorsal soft rays 18–28; anal spines 1, anal soft rays 21–26.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75–100 gallons for a school due to larger size.
  • Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 75–82°F (24–28°C), pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness.
  • Diet: Omnivorous — readily accepts high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, active mid-to-upper water column schooling fish. Excellent for larger planted community tanks with similarly sized peaceful companions. Provide a tight-fitting lid as they are known to jump.
