Vulcan Cory (Hoplisoma sp. CW111)

A peaceful and sociable armored catfish from the Xingu and Iriri river systems in the Lower Amazon, Brazil. Known in the hobby by its CW code (CW111) and nicknamed the “Vulcan Cory,” this species is appreciated for its striking appearance and active shoaling behavior. It remains relatively uncommon in the trade compared to demand, making it a desirable find for Corydoras enthusiasts.

Key Features

  • Maximum Size: Typically 5–7 cm / ~2–2.8 inches SL (genus standard).
  • Appearance: Sturdy, armored body with patterning that has earned it the “Vulcan” moniker. Females grow larger and more full-bodied than males; mature males develop more pointed fin tips.
  • Fin Details: Typical for the genus, with rounded to slightly pointed fins depending on sex and maturity.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20–30 gallons for a small group (larger is better for active shoaling).
  • Water Parameters: Tropical freshwater; 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Excellent water quality and a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate are essential to protect sensitive barbels.
  • Diet: Omnivorous bottom feeder — readily accepts sinking tablets, granules, flakes, and a variety of live or frozen foods (bloodworm, white worm, daphnia, Tubifex).
  • Behavior: Peaceful, sociable shoaling fish that thrives in groups. Excellent community tank inhabitant. Provide driftwood, plants, and open foraging areas with some shaded spots. Egg-layer; females hold eggs between pelvic fins before depositing them on glass or décor. Breeding reports exist in the hobby.
